Feeding
It is very important that your cavy gets a balanced diet of dry food, fresh greens, root vegetables and vitamin C.
Cavies do not produce their own vitamin C, so you must feed fresh greens and root vegetables to provide it for them.
What to feed:
Apples, carrots, beetroot, swede, brocoli, lettuce, cucumber, cabbage, celery, cauliflower leaves, sweetcorn and sweetcorn leaves, plenty of good dust free hay, dry mix -crushed pea, bran, maize, oats, (You can either make it yourself or buy it from pet stores or horse shops)dandelion leaves and the flower, sweet potatos and curly kale.
The main food to use is cabbage/cauliflower leaves and carrot, swede or beetroot.
The other feeds listed above should be fed as treats, not as part of their diet.
Each cavy should get 1 cabbage leaf, 1 small chunk of root vegetable and 1 handfull of dry mix per day. They should have a constant supply of hay and access to a water bottle with fresh water in.
If you feed too much greens or root vegetables you can give them an upset stomach so its vital to feed the correct amount.
Bread is good for a guinea pig's teeth, put all the backs of your loaves in an oven tray and bake it in the oven untill hard, crunchy and golden brown. They love crunching on it and its good for them!
Alternate their feed daily to give them a different surprise every day. (they like this) It gives them something new to look forward to every day.
TIP: Save all your vegetable peelings from dinner! (carrot, cabage, brocolli, peppers, cucmber, celery, etc!) No potatoe or onion though!
